www.eastgippslandweddingexpo.com.au | EAST GIPPSLAND WEDDING PLANNER 2017 17 It was in the year 1979, when Lloyd Kitt was a young 16-year-old from Nunawading in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, that he decided to leave school and find a job so he could “go and do stuff!” “I landed a position at The Age newspaper as a sales clerk in the classifieds department based at their old Spencer Street building,” Lloyd said. “First day on the job, l was up nice and early, new trousers, shiny black hush puppies with a crisp white shirt, school tie and a wintry coloured argyle jumper, which made me look like l was about to tee off the first at Saint Andrews. “Although very nervous, l seemed to settle in pretty well, apart from the fact that everyone was older and bigger, but it didn’t take long for them to teach me how to do interesting things such as swear, drink beer and play cards, swear more, drink more and cheat at cards. “Yep, this was the grown up world and all was good until the boss said, ‘Lloyd, you need to get a suit if you wanna make it and be part of the big smoke!’ “Hell’s bells! $399 for a single-breasted Romany wool. Lucky I started saving quickly as mum and dad couldn’t possibly afford that kind of coin. “The problem was that having such a small body frame and not used to working from 9am till 5.30pm, the weight of the suit exhausted me and more often than not I would be fast a sleep on the 5.48pm Belgrave train.” OFF THE CUFF WITH LLOYD In 1984 Lloyd became the youngest sales representative for the department at 21 years and although proud of his achievement had to find $1000 for another couple of suits. He now owns and runs Lloyd’s Quality Menswear in Bairnsdale’s Main Street. “It is now 2017, and having had 20 years in the ‘rag trade’ l reflect on how things were in the old days,” Lloyd said. “Fashion changes in many ways. What we must remember is to be diverse as styles suddenly appear again after a long absence. “The most notable change in the industry, believe it or not, is the price of suits. Yes, with the introduction and development of super fine wools like merino, the price has dropped dramatically due to the fact that it is still weighed in bails and producers have been able to pass the cost onto users. “At Lloyd’s you will get 100 per cent super fine merino wool suits at 1979 prices. Whether you are looking for a personal suit or a range for a wedding party, this is the time to buy and not hire and keep the garment as a memory from that special occasion.” Since opening in Bairnsdale, Lloyd’s has become the destination for quality menswear for the Gippsland Lakes and districts having already fitted out 20 wedding parties inside 12 months.
